AHA TENANCIES: A LASTING
FOUNDATION IN A CHANGING SECTOR
A
gricultural Holdings Act (AHA) tenancies remain a
cornerstone of the tenanted farming sector. While
Farm Business Tenancies (FBTs) are now the only form
of new agricultural tenancy agreement available, AHA
tenancies continue to underpin a significant proportion
of farmland, providing long standing stability and
continuity across generations.
One of the defining strengths of an AHA tenancy is the
security it offers. For many farming families, this has
created the confidence to invest in land, infrastructure
and long-term business development. Over time, this
security has enabled holdings to evolve into wellestablished and highly productive enterprises, often
supported by deep local knowledge and a strong
connection to the land.
These long-standing arrangements have also fostered
enduring relationships between landlords and tenants.
In many cases, these relationships are built on trust,
shared understanding and a mutual commitment to the
success of the holding. This stability can be a
significant advantage, particularly at a time when
agriculture is navigating economic uncertainty and
structural change.
